COVID-19 Update | 16 April 2021

The Committee reviewed actions from the last meeting.

The Committee noted the overall National Care Group statistics with regard to infection rates. It was pleasing to note that there had been no additional reported cases in respect of the individuals we support.

Regional reports were received, and it was again confirmed that infection rates amongst individuals we support, and colleagues again appeared to be levelling out. This again seemed to a consistent trend, but all noted the need to ensure everyone stays focused.

Some difficulties in accessing LFD testing kits in one area were noted and it was agreed this would be raised nationally if no progress made.

Vaccination rates are continuing to improve and reaching high levels in all Regions. Progress here was seen as a positive step forward. National Care Group continues to respect the views of those not wishing to have the vaccine and hopes that over time concerns amongst some will be addressed.

The Committee discussed the revised guidance in England on safe working in Care Homes and the apparent contradiction in respect of wearing of PPE. This has been confirmed and the expectation that the 6 April guidance should be followed, and face masks should be changed after every episode of personal care. A poster and internal communication on this will be circulated.

The Committee noted that a revised competency assessment tool had been developed in respect of donning and doffing masks following feedback from CQC. This had been circulated and was approved by the Committee for implementation.

The position with regard to pets within care homes was discussed with a preference that visitors should keep pets outside on visits.

The Committee was asked to ensure all trackers are up to date to facilitate the required financial returns. In addition, the Committee were advised that central supplies of PPE were available if required.

It was noted that restrictions in Wales continue to be lifted.

“The continued reduction in infection rates is really encouraging and such a great relief. As we continue to say, we really need everybody to continue to keep our focus and makes sure we are all doing what is required to uphold the highest standards with regard to infection control.” Karen Lewis, Chief Operations Officer.
