Dancing Through the Streets of Stoke
Communities across Stoke-on-Trent took part in a landmark parade to mark the city’s 100th anniversary. Among those involved in the momentous celebration was Sonia, a person we support at Oak House, who proudly danced through the streets with her Bhangra dance group.
Being part of a key community event is a huge achievement for Sonia, and a memory that will last a lifetime!
Empowered to achieve goals
Sonia is an autistic person with a mild learning disability and bipolar disorder.
A little over a year ago, Sonia developed a personalised support plan with the Oak House team to help her achieve her healthier living goals.
It was during a day out with her support worker that Sonia saw a poster for the local Bhangra dance group in a shop window. Even though Sonia felt very nervous about booking a trial class, with encouragement from her dedicated support team, she arranged to attend a session. The rest is history!
Developed independence and confidence
Being part of the local dance group has empowered Sonia to develop confidence, form lasting friendships, and work towards achieving fitness and independence goals.
Shannon Simpson is the Service Manager at Oak House. She said:
“We’re so proud of Sonia’s progression since joining the Bhangra dance group. She now has no problem striking up conversations with members of the dance group and has a new circle of friends.
“All of this has supported Sonia’s independence goal, too. With newfound confidence, she independently follows the dance instructor's steps and routines, asking for help from her support team only when needed.
“Sonia’s fitness has also massively improved! She looks forward to attending the class every week, as well as going to the gym. When you find a passion for something you love doing, it doesn’t feel like a chore to exercise!”- Shannon Simpson, Service Manager at Oak House
An unforgettable experience at The People's Parade
When Sonia was asked by her Bhangra dance group to take part in Stoke-on-Trent’s 100th anniversary celebration, she was extremely excited about it.
The People’s Parade featured 1000 community people from across Stoke-on-Trent, alongside specially made large-scale puppets, costumes, live music, dancers, and banners.
Dancing alongside her classmates, seeing the streets of Stoke-on-Trent come alive with music and colour, and being part of a landmark event is an experience that Sonia is incredibly proud to have been a part of.
She told us:
“I really enjoyed it, I love my teacher, I liked dancing with everyone, and wearing my costume."
