Simon Achieves his Ultimate Goal
Simon is embarking on the next chapter of his life. His progression story is a reminder that not all farewells have to be sad. Although the team at Highlea Care will miss him immensely, they are bursting with pride at his achievements.
Supporting Simon to develop independence
Before settling at Highlea Care, his home for the past several years, Simon had moved around various supported living settings.
Simon has learning disabilities, ADHD, depression, and epilepsy. He will be the first to tell you he could be quite challenging and, at times, required 1:1 support.
His move to Highlea Care was not without challenges but he eventually took full responsibility for running his own flat, with minimal support.
The team supported him in building his confidence and following a support plan, which gradually allowed him greater independence. They reassured him along the way that it was OK to make mistakes, as his nerves would hold him back from taking first steps.
Supporting Simon to get a job
Simon’s increased confidence led him to achieve one of his ultimate goals when he began volunteering. Together, Simon and the team were hopeful it would give him the confidence to enter the working environment.
He thrived in his community and did so well that he was offered a part-time paid job helping other adults with learning disabilities. He completed the Oliver McGowan Learning Disability and Autism programme and went on to achieve his entry-level 2 & 3 in Maths and English.
Embarking on the next chapter
By the time it was identified that Simon no longer had any support needs, he was so confident in his abilities that he made all the new housing arrangements by himself.
Within a matter of weeks, he registered, viewed properties, packed, and organised removals by himself. The team was on hand only to keep him company – and to help with the heavy lifting!
He told us:
“The support has helped me conquer my fears. I’m extremely happy with how my circumstances have improved and how far I’ve come as an individual.
"I am going to keep bettering myself and who knows what will be around the corner. Nothing is stopping me from achieving things, I’ve proven this to myself.”- Simon
Highlea Care team leader Danielle Blenkinsop could not be prouder of the progress Simon has made.
She said:
“All the team said the same thing; that it was the proudest moment to see Simon achieve the ultimate goal of independence and progress to living such a good quality of life. I am so proud of the team too.”
- Danielle Blenkinsop, Highlea Care Team Leader
Simon has moved on, but he will never be a stranger to his Highlea Care family.
