Neil’s Journey to Independence

With colleague empowerment, Neil is making remarkable progress in developing confidence

About Neil

Neil has a cognitive impairment due to a hypoxic brain injury. Before moving to Albert Road, a specialist neurological residential service, he lived at Ashbrook Neuro Rehabilitation.

The team devised a personalised support plan with Neil to help him progress on his journey to gain greater control in his life.

Over time, and with encouraged newfound determination, Neil developed the skills to progress to Albert Road where he continues to achieve goals.

Goals Achieved by Neil

At National Care Group, we empower the people we support to unlock their full potential.

We’re so proud of the goals Neil has achieved since moving into Albert Road. With support from the dedicated team at Albert Road, he is learning new skills, improving mobility confidence, and is more active in his local community.

  • Improved mobility and community engagement – When Neil first moved into Albert Road, he relied heavily on his wheelchair to get around. He now has the confidence to walk around the house completely independently. He continues to decrease his wheelchair reliance outside the house too. With support from colleagues, Neil enjoys walks to the pub or local shops and often feels comfortable enough to leave his wheelchair at home. What’s more, Neil has lost a significant amount of weight since improving his mobility.

  • Independent living skills – Neil has quite the sweet tooth and loves taking part in baking activities with his housemates. It’s a group activity that the whole house enjoys. He has also been empowered to do more for himself around the home. Due to his ABI, daily life skills are a challenge. With the support of colleagues, Neil has mastered making himself a cup of tea and preparing a sandwich for his lunch.

Neil’s Next Goals

Our colleagues will continue to support Neil with developing independence with daily living skills, encouraging new activities, and discovering more of his interests.

Denise Buchanan is the Team Leader at Albert Road. She said:

“We’re so proud of Neil’s progression and will continue to empower him on his journey to greater independence.”
