Jamie’s Journey to Employment
At National Care Group, we are committed to supporting individuals to achieve goals and unlock their potential.
Jamie is an autistic person with learning disabilities. He is supported by our colleagues at Walliscote Road. Since moving into the Western-super-Mare residential service, he has made incredible progress in developing independence, including securing a voluntary job in his local community.
We asked Jamie to tell us about the process he went through to apply for the role and what he loves the most about his job.
First steps to volunteering
It was during a day out in town with his support worker when Jamie spotted an advert asking for volunteers in the window at a local charity shop. He expressed an interest to find out more and apply for the role.
Preparing for the interview
The job application process can be a daunting experience. With support from the dedicated team at Walliscote Road, Jamie was well-prepared for the interview. Colleagues supported Jamie by doing a test interview with questions and ensuring that the role would be suitable for him.
What Jamie loves about his job
Jamie told us that the best part of his job is when he gets to work on the till. He enjoys interacting with customers and having a good chat with them. Since working at the charity shop, his social confidence has continued to grow, and he takes great pride in his work.
Developing independence
Jamie’s dedication and enthusiasm have led him to volunteer at a second charity shop in the local community. Through these roles, he continues to develop his confidence, communication, and employability skills.
“By successfully going through the interview process and then being offered the job, Jamie has developed valuable life skills. It’s been amazing to watch his confidence grow each day.
“He loves the role so much and has since found more volunteering positions, which have included completing training both face-to-face and online, with support from colleagues.
“Other great achievements by Jamie since living with us have included increased independent living skills in the kitchen and developing the confidence to speak up when things are not right.
“We are incredibly proud of everything Jamie has achieved since being part of the Walliscote Road family.“
