Empowering Andrea's independence

Slow stream rehabilitation at Ashbrook empowered Andrea to regain her confidence and independence following a brain injury

When Andrea moved into Ashbrook Neuro Rehabilitation following a long hospital stay, her ultimate goal was to live independently again with her dog.

At 55, Andrea was found unresponsive with a significant brain bleed. This resulted in a brain injury that left her with left-sided weakness, mobility challenges and difficulties with memory and communication.

The slow-stream rehabilitation Andrea received from the dedicated nurse-led team at Ashbrook enabled her to achieve positive recovery outcomes and gain the confidence to embark on the next steps of her rehabilitation journey.

Collaborative, tailored support

In the early stages of her stay at Ashbrook, Andrea heavily relied on a walking stick. Her mobility was limited not only by physical weakness but also by a strong fear of falling, as she had experienced multiple falls prior to admission.

Andrea also struggled to form sentences, often becoming frustrated when she couldn’t express what she wanted or needed.

Through a collaborative approach, with a team of professionals and input from Andrea, a tailored support package was devised to empower Andrea to overcome challenges and work towards her ultimate goal of independent living.

Positive outcomes through consistent support

The person-centred, slow-stream rehabilitation Andrea received at Ashbrook gave her the time, space and consistent support she needed to progress at her own pace.

Occupational therapists, physiotherapists, rehab coaches, speech and language therapists, and support workers empowered Andrea to rebuild strength, improve mobility, and develop confidence.

Andrea achieved several rehabilitation milestones:

  • Regaining mobility: Andrea progressed from shuffling with a walking stick to moving more confidently, eventually reaching her goal of walking without one.
  • Climbing stairs again: Support from occupational therapists and physiotherapists eliminated Andrea’s fear of falling. She can now manage steps independently.
  • Improving communication: Specialist support enabled Andrea to overcome her communication challenges. Over time, she improved her ability to express her needs.
  • Increasing social confidence: Improved communication led to increased social confidence. Community-based occupational therapy sessions enabled Andrea to enhance her independent living skills.

“Working collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team, our focus for Andrea adopted a positive risk-taking framework, balancing her safety with rehabilitation progression and exploring what mattered most to Andrea when setting achievable, person-centred goals. We wish her well in the next steps of her rehabilitation pathway.”

Transition to supported living

After achieving several rehabilitation goals during her stay at Ashbrook, Andrea felt confident to take the next steps on her rehabilitation pathway.

In March 2026, she chose to transition to a supported living environment, where she can continue to develop her independence.

“Andrea’s personal determination, alongside the person-centred support she received at Ashbrook, enabled her to achieve positive rehabilitation outcomes and her goals. She was the life and soul of Ashbrook, always spreading smiles and caring deeply for everyone. While the team at Ashbrook will miss Andrea immensely, we are all so proud of her progress and achievements.”
