Community, Confidence, and Connections

Kim’s 21 year journey with the Affinity Supporting People Team

At National Care Group, we believe that empowerment is the key to unlocking potential. Our mission is to support people in leading fulfilling, independent lives as active members of their communities. Perhaps no one’s story brings this to life better than Kim’s.

Based in Burnley, Kim has been supported by members of our Affinity Supporting People team for 21 years. For over a decade of that journey, she has worked alongside her dedicated keyworker, Lisa. Together, they have built a partnership based on trust, good humour, and a shared commitment to Kim’s goals.

The heart of her home

Kim lives in a shared house with four gentlemen who also receive supported living assistance. Kim affectionately refers to herself as the “mum of the house,” ensuring everything runs smoothly for her and her housemates.

Kim’s independence is a source of great pride for her. She manages her life with just two hours of allocated support each week, choosing exactly how to use them. Whether it’s navigating important healthcare appointments or “banking” her hours for social excursions — like theatre trips and seaside outings organised by the Affinity team — Kim is always in the driver’s seat, and the Affinity Team makes every reasonable adjustment possible to meet her every move.

Contributing to the Burnley community

  • Gladrags Charity Shop: An asset at the shop for over eight years, Kim is told by colleagues she can “never leave” because she is part of the furniture. From steaming garments to managing the till with a smile, Kim wears her Gladrags uniform with pride. As a fashion lover, she also enjoys first pick of the donations—recently securing a stunning pink fur coat!
  • Middlesex Avenue Over 50’s Lunch Club: Kim has been a volunteer here for a staggering 20 years. She is involved in every part of the day, from meal prep and setting tables to the good conversation she shares with the members.
  • Freshfields Social Club: Kim balances her time between helping organise activities and hitting the dance floor with the club’s dancing group.

"Kim is a bit of a community champion. Through these roles, she has built strong friendships and a sense of confidence that shines through everything she does."

Overcoming fears and finding adventure

The past year has marked some of Kim’s biggest milestones yet. With Lisa’s support, Kim took her very first overseas trip, choosing to visit Croatia. Managing her budget and building the courage to fly were massive achievements. Today, Kim and Lisa enjoy looking through the photo album of their Mediterranean memories while planning to browse travel brochures for Kim’s next international adventure.

Closer to home, Kim is preparing to tackle a long-term personal goal. After years of feeling self-conscious about a damaged tooth but fearing the dentist, Kim finally feels empowered to undergo dental surgery this year. It is a significant step forward in her journey of self-confidence, supported every step of the way by Lisa and the Affinity team.

Empowering potential

Kim’s story is an inspiring example of what can be achieved when professional expertise meets personal determination. Lisa and her manager, Mandy, describe Kim as a joy to support—a sentiment that is clearly mutual.

At National Care Group, we are incredibly proud of our Affinity Supporting People colleagues. They don’t just provide support; they unlock the door to a life brimming with meaning, friendship, and independence.
