From Supported to Support Worker

We celebrate Daniella who has been empowered to unlock her potential and progress from supported to support worker at Shelton Care Group

Meet Daniella, a truly remarkable colleague who was once supported by National Care Group’s Shelton Care at Regent Road. She now lives her life independent of any support and is a colleague who supports others at Links Day Services.

Daniella's inspirational journey

When Daniella was younger, she moved to Strathmore College. At the time, her autism and learning disability had made it too challenging to continue living at her family home. Shortly after, she moved on to live at Regent Road in Hanley, where she spent most of her younger adult years.

Whilst Daniella was living at Regent Road, she received 1-1 support on a 24-hour basis, along with having a Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DOLS) put in place in the best interests of keeping her safe.

Daniella told us;

“Thanks to the support from the team at Regent Road, I started to become more independent and the DOLs was thankfully lifted. My manager, Donna, gave me so much support and started to help me develop skills to know who to trust. With Donna's constant encouragement and belief in me, I became an independent woman."

Empowering independence, to empower independence

A combination of the dedicated support from her team and her own personal determination empowered the freedom to eventually safely venture out and socialise. Daniella met partner Mark at a YMCA disco, and they instantly hit it off. A few years later, they went on to marry. Daniella continues to live independently but sees husband Mark every day.

Daniella has always had a passion for helping people and wanted to give others the support she once needed herself. She attended a local jobs fair and bumped into Donna, her old manager. She handed in her CV, and went on to be offered an interview and shortly after, was accepted for the position of support worker at Links. Daniella had been rewarded with her dream job!

“Being a support worker is the best job in the world! It gives me a great sense of achievement and my life right now could not be any better. Four years into my role, my advice to anyone is work hard for what you want and you will get there! ”
