Shelton Care Group, part of National Care Group, hosted The Lord Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent, Councillor Steve Watkins, at one of their residential and day support services on Thursday to celebrate the city’s centenary and gain insight into the crucial role of social care in the community.
The visit was an opportunity to highlight the vital work of Shelton Care Group, which supports over 170 people with learning disabilities, mental health needs, and autism across the Stoke-on-Trent area. The provision is locally run but benefits from the backing and investment of National Care Group, which ensures high-quality support is delivered by local people, for local people.
During the visit, the Lord Mayor met with people who have made Regent Road, one of the five residential services run by Shelton, their home, learning about how the team supports them to live their best lives. In a touching moment, they presented the Lord Mayor with artwork created by people who attend Links Day Service, another Shelton support provision, which depicted everything they love and cherish about their city.
The visit also offered a platform for a constructive discussion about the future of social care in Stoke-on-Trent. Leaders from the organisation were joined by people they support to brief the Lord Mayor on the challenges facing the sector and the city, emphasising the need for ongoing support and collaboration.
"We were honoured to host the Lord Mayor and showcase the quality work happening here at Shelton Care Group. This visit not only celebrated our city's milestone but also gave us a chance to discuss how we can continue to provide essential care and support for people in our community. We are incredibly proud of our team and the people we support, who are at the heart of everything we do."
~ Katie Fallows, Regional Operations Manager
Brenda, who lives at Regent Road, had the opportunity to chat with the Lord Mayor.
“It was a pleasure to speak with the Lord Mayor, who really listened to us and even invited us to have a tour of his home – the Lord Mayor’s Parlour, which we cannot wait to accept.”
~ Brenda
The Lord Mayor shared how happy he was to meet everyone.
“The welcome I received at Regent Road was wonderful. I was overwhelmed by how happy, passionate and enthusiastic everyone was, including the people who have made it a warm and friendly home and the Shelton Care Group team.”
~ Cllr Steve Watkins, Lord Mayor
