Registered manager Gaby’s almost 18-year social care career journey is an inspiring one – from helping out as a teenager to progressing to a senior, team leader, service manager, and eventually registered manager across two services.
Gaby recently shared her story with us:
How did your social care career begin?
My first proper job was back in 2007 when I was 16. I started working at Endurance Care’s Cleveland House residential home in Broadstairs. It began with me helping out around the home before I found myself working in the laundry room.
What happened next?
Over time, I built up such a rapport with the people who lived in Cleveland that I didn’t want to leave them. I approached the manager about a full-time support worker role and never looked back.
What inspired you to work in the sector?
My sister was working at the same place and seemed to enjoy it. My ambition had been to be a personal trainer, but once I got into the role of support worker, it felt so natural to me.
What moments in your career make you realise you’re making a difference?
There’s nothing more rewarding than being thanked personally by the people we support for the difference we make in their lives, but also seeing them progress and flourish, meet their goals and achieve greater independence.
Have there been any challenges or setbacks you’ve faced?
There are always challenges, but I love what I do. Personally, there were times when I lacked confidence, especially as I started to progress, until I saw my managers’ belief in me and realised that my teams were on board.
Balancing my career with being a mum of three can be a challenge at times, but the rewards of each are far greater. A cancer diagnosis in early 2024, followed by uncertainty and extensive treatment, meant I was away from work for some time. This didn’t stop me from progressing, though, and when I returned to work later in the year, I gained acting manager registration for Broadstairs.
How do you think your colleagues would describe you?
I’ve always been committed to my role and constantly develop ways to ensure everyone is included in activities and creating bright and inviting homes. I’m told that I’m hard working, dedicated and motivated. Colleagues say that I go beyond, but I don’t consider myself to be doing this; I feel I’m just doing my job.
Has there been a reflective moment in your career?
Finding the discipline to complete my Level 2 and 3 professional qualifications, and then achieving a distinction in Level 5, made me reflect on the progress I’d made over the years. I realised I can lead a team well and drive them towards achieving CQC Outstanding.
What’s next for Gaby?
After a brief break from studying, I’m hoping to start my Level 6 professional qualification later this year. Right now, my focus is on achieving upgraded CQC ratings.
Any final words?
During my career in social care, I’ve always said I want to work in a place where I’d be happy for myself or my family to live. My priority is for people to live life to their fullest while being treated with the dignity and respect that they deserve.
Since Gaby’s interview, her services have been inspected by CQC and have both achieved upgraded ‘Good’ ratings. Read the story here.
