Meet Tony: Rutland House's Recycling Champion

How a paid role in grounds and maintenance helped Tony find his passion and cut Shelton Care's landfill waste to under 1%

Meet Tony!

Tony is supported by the team at Rutland House, a National Care Group service operated by Shelton Care. Knowing how much Tony loves to keep busy, service manager Lisa and the team began exploring ways to build responsibility into his day and quickly realised he’d thrive with a role in the service’s grounds and maintenance.

That thinking led to something more: a paid role, created especially for Tony, as Grounds and Maintenance Manager. It’s a goal he’d been keen to achieve, and one that’s given him real purpose.

The right man for the job

Tony’s day-to-day now includes safely storing COSHH deliveries, weeding, sweeping, and keeping outdoor areas safe, tidy and hygienic, including the bin storage areas. He checks that waste is going into the correct bins, something the service had struggled with before he took it on.

His role builds on work that started back in 2024, when Rutland House became part of NCG’s new recycling pilot scheme, and the team first supported Tony in getting to grips with recycling in his own flat. From there, he took on the outdoor bins, learning what goes where across the whole site.

Recycling the right way

Since Tony took charge, NCG’s recycling partner, Reconomy, has had no complaints about contamination, a marked change from before. He’s proud of getting it right, and that pride shows: he wears his high-vis and carries his litter picker to do the job properly and safely, every time.

Tony’s dedication has played a real part in Shelton Care Group now sending less than 1% of its waste to landfill.

"Tony has taken real ownership of this role. He's made a genuine difference to the service and to the environment. We couldn't be prouder of him."

Reaching goals and unlocking potential

Tony’s story is a brilliant example of person-centred support in action. Helping someone reach their goals and unlock their potential, with ripple effects for the whole service and the environment.
