COVID-19 Update | 22 January 2021

The Committee reviewed actions from the previous meeting.

It was noted that the position with regard to LFD testing for support staff only able to take place within services was still unchanged nationally. The Committee discussed arrangements for ensuring colleagues were appropriately trained for undertaking tests when arrangements were extended.

It was noted that the NCG COVID Policy and the Care Home Visiting policy had been updated this week.

A spike in positive cases amongst the people we support was reported. It was noted this was more prevalent amongst those with a learning disability.

The thoughts of the Committee were with those people we support and colleagues currently in hospital. The Committee noted that it was unlikely that the proposed restrictions on staff movements between services would now be implemented. This was welcomed.

Regional reports were received and noted by the Committee. Changes in infection rates across Regions were presented and noted.

It was pleasing to note that vitamin D was being made available in some areas and this was welcomed.

With regard to Covid vaccinations across Regions, it was noted that these had commenced in some services. This was encouraging, although some colleagues were refusing the opportunity to be vaccinated. It was recognised this was a matter of personal choice and individual circumstances but NCG would continue to support vaccination as it was considered to offer a real opportunity to beat the pandemic. The Committee noted that further advice was being sought with regard to any employment or recruitment considerations that should be applied in the future.

Flu vaccinations rates had increased amongst the people we support but were static for colleagues. This was welcomed and it was noted numbers were much higher than in previous years. Committee members were thanked for supporting all vaccination initiatives. An update on the recently announced Staff Capacity Fund (England) was noted. Details of how this fund would be allocated were currently patchy but would be circulated when confirmed. Members of the Committee were asked to give some thought as to how any funds received could be deployed.

Committee members were asked to ensure that unless there is a specific reason that contractors should not be admitted where urgent visits have been requested, these must be permitted. Contractors have all been instructed that LFD tests will be required before they can commence work on site.

CQC, CIW and Ofsted updates received in the week were noted.

“Our thoughts and best wishes are with all those people we support and colleagues who have tested positive for Covid and particularly those currently within hospital. Our services continue to work hard to keep everyone safe and well at a time when there remain real pressures on them. The vaccination is beginning to be rolled out across the country and we welcome this.” James Allen, Chief Executive.
