Stephen's dedication to recycling

Thanks to Go Green in Kidderminster, people we support with complex needs are being given the opportunity to participate in recycling activities and initiatives, resulting in significant amounts of metals being saved from landfill.

The team at Endurance Care Worcestershire supports Stephen to volunteer as a trainee at Go Green’s centre five days per week. He has been attending since the centre began in 2014, ready for work with a packed lunch, wearing his uniform.

Committed to a brighter future

Stephen originally travelled to the centre with his parents and has since worked with his support team to develop independent travel skills, allowing him to commute on his own by taxi.

The trainees volunteering at the charity are involved in all aspects of recycling, from collections and sorting to crushing and light assembly work.

Stephen’s work involves his favourite activity of using the machinery to crush cans, along with some light assembly work, currently packaging manufacturing products that contribute to the charity’s income.

Stephen is very passionate about his work and the contributions they are making to the environment. He has taken part in many initiatives over the years, including helping to create art displays from the crushed cans, and he never misses a shift. In 2016 and 2022, Stephen was awarded Go Green’s ‘Green Can’ award for outstanding recycling, in recognition of his dedication and hard work.

“It's wonderful to support Stephen in contributing to a more sustainable future, as he gets such a sense of reward from his work. Thank you to Go Green for bringing this fantastic opportunity to our community and our team in encouraging and supporting Stephen’s choices.”

Community partnerships

According to their website, with help from the trainees, Go Green has saved 16,254 bikes from going to landfill since 2014, recycled over 22,000 kg of aluminium (the equivalent of two double-decker buses), and saved over 13 tonnes of steel, 2.5 tonnes of foil, and over 9,000 kg of plastic from landfill by recycling them.
