CHANGING LIVES | Chantelle's Steps to Independence

About Chantelle

Chantelle is a Person We Support at Endurance Care, Kings Lynn.

Chantelle has a learning disability; she was in care as a baby in Newcastle and at the age of three she was adopted and moved to Coventry where she lived with her adoptive parents.

Chantelle’s first steps to independence

The family moved to Norfolk when Chantelle was 19, and it was then she decided she wanted more independence, to gain more confidence and learn living skills.

With the support of her parents and the guidance of social services, Chantelle was introduced to the Enablement home at our Endurance Care service in Kings Lynn. It seemed like the perfect arrangement for Chantelle to make those life changing first steps to being self-sufficient.

Enablement is a temporary supported living service for adults who may need to develop life skills and independence. The Team’s focus is supporting them with everyday routines; things they will need to manage in their own home. They also support with securing work placements and registering for social housing, ahead of their progression to living fully independent lives.

Although Chantelle was nervous about making the initial move, with the support and encouragement of her parents, arrangements were made for her to leave home.

Chantelle’s progression

Chantelle has been fully supported by the Endurance Care team, and with their help and guidance, she has grown so much in confidence and has much of the independence she had yearned for. Chantelle now cooks independently and does her own washing and cleaning. She is keen to start working soon and is being supported to make her next steps into paid employment.

Chantelle is also working closely with one of her support workers, Hannah, to address the issues she has with her weight. It’s something Chantelle struggles with, so together, they have made it a focus and are setting goals to help her gain weight.

Rachael, the registered Manager of Endurance Care says of Chantelle:

“She is very kind and caring and helps out a lot with the other People We Support. She likes to help others and has taken part in emergency first aid training. She’s always supportive to others in the house, including Colleagues, and greets everyone with a smile.”

The future is bright

Chantelle met George approximately four years ago through a mutual friend of hers. They naturally clicked and their friendship grew. In October last year they started dating and their relationship has grown from strength to strength.

George has helped Chantelle tremendously with her mental health struggles. Along with the support of the Endurance Care Team, he has been a source of encouragement for her gaining more confidence in herself and being around others.

At a 24th birthday dinner for Chantelle’s this year, George proposed to her.

Unbeknown to Chantelle, George had discussed his intentions with her parents and had asked her dad for his permission to propose to her. George was very nervous about proposing, but with everybody’s support he did it – Chantelle said yes, of course!

Congratulations to Chantelle and George on their engagement.
